The Book of Lismore: An Introduction by Donald Brady will be launched in Lismore Castle this evening by County Waterford Mayor, Councillor Nora Flynn.

Mr Brady's work is the first comprehensive overview of the manuscript ever produced, though the book has previously drawn the attention of Celtic scholars such as Douglas Hyde and Professor Brian O Cuiv.

Also known as the Book of Mac Carthaigh Riabhach the manuscript was produced around 1480. It is an anthology of material gathered in Irish monasteries from the 6th-15th centuries. Written entirely in Irish it features Celtic folklore, European history and Irish poetry. The book, lost for years, was discovered concealed in the castle walls by workmen in 1814. Now restored it resides in Chatsworth House, the main residence of the Duke of Devonshire.

Donald Brady, who recently retired as Waterford County Librarian, is editor of Hansard's History of Waterford and co-editor of The Famine in Waterford 1845-50. He has also published a guide to Waterford Writers and a new edition of Smith's History of Waterford.
